<td class="text-paragraph-pattern-container mobile-resize-text " style="padding: 0px; border-collapse: collapse; padding: 0 0 10px 0"> <p style="margin: 10px 0 0 0; margin-top: 0">I think the short answer is: The important place that this is done in OpenSAML is <tt>org.opensaml.xmlsec.config.impl.ApacheXMLSecurityInitializer</tt>, which is one of the auto-magical <tt>Initializer</tt> impls, and in my opinion we should still explicitly do that Santuario init there. And as long as MDA is initing OpenSAML upfront somewhere, it doesn't need to init Santuario itself, unless it just wants to be defensive or something.</p> <p style="margin: 10px 0 0 0">FYI, The 4 Santuario classes you reference above with implicit static init blocks are in the <tt>org.apache.jcp</tt> package, and those are only used in their JSR 105 impl, and OpenSAML doesn't use that. We use the Santuario pre-JSR-105 "classic" API. So I don't think we get that implicit init. I don't know what MDA uses, so don't know whether you're getting that implicit init or not. And of course none of those would cover encryption cases (which MDA probably doesn't do).</p> <p style="margin: 10px 0 0 0">So for OpenSAML, since it's an important core library, I personally think it's absolutely good form and formally speaking necessary for us to explicitly init Santuario. In v2 it used to be absolutely necessary. We used various algorithm mappings and other things that are set up by Santuario's init, and so we absolutely had to init it early in order for that stuff to work. In v3 I <b>think</b> that we largely don't do that any more since we basically implemented our own algorithm registry. But in my opinion it's still necessary for OpenSAML to explicitly call that, both formally and practically, in case they add something in the future. You'll also see that we default in a Santuario boolean property there in our initializer, which is also important. </p> <p style="margin: 10px 0 0 0">There are also a few other places in OpenSAML related to signing and encryption components where we check and init it also. That's mostly defensive and I think a carry over from v2. May not be strictly necessary, but it doesn't hurt anything really.</p> <p style="margin: 10px 0 0 0"> </p> </td>
