The parent notation looks the same, but it's not.</p> <p style="margin: 10px 0 0 0">In the former case, the parent path is needed because the bean import is conducted relative to the concrete flow definition file's location and done by SWF.</p> <p style="margin: 10px 0 0 0">In the latter case, the parent path is needed because the bean import is conducted relative to the concrete flow's bean file location and done by Spring.</p> <p style="margin: 10px 0 0 0">The benefit of the latter is that an externally defined flow can inherit from abstract.flow and can pull in the necessary beans by doing an import from its beans file of the abstract-beans.xml file via ${idp.home}/system, whereas in the former case, the parent flow attempts to bean-import the abstract-beans file relative to the location of the externally defined flow.</p> <p style="margin: 10px 0 0 0">In theory this should make it possible to document certain system-defined base flows and beans as public APIs, which was nominally the intent in certain cases. The cost is that the child flows are required to do imports that technically belong to the parent, but that's relatively simple in most cases.</p> </td>
