<p style="margin: 10px 0 0 0">There is nothing that can be done. The solution is "stop using large aggregates", and while there are a few bugs left, the dynamic metadata support in the SP is at least usable at this point. That's the only fix.</p>
<p style="margin: 10px 0 0 0">The size is the only known issue, and that's been understood for years. The code available for this step, which we did not create but which nobody now maintains but us, is quite poorly designed and not able to handle these kinds of documents. It will not be fixed, and the alternative may or may not be better, but requires a total rewrite of the SP, and that's not going to happen.</p>
<p style="margin: 10px 0 0 0">Unless you have only one core, the SP should not pause if it's validating a new copy, that happens in the background, and does not block requests. Of course, if the server is out of memory or limited in some way, it may not have the ability to handle it all in a reasonable fashion, but on a larger server, you wouldn't notice any real overhead while it's happening, unlike at startup where it would be a hard pause.</p>
<p style="margin: 10px 0 0 0">Also, you could force the SP to update its metadata at any time, just touch shibboleth2.xml so it reloads itself.</p>
<p style="margin: 10px 0 0 0">For the record, a decent server takes less than 90 seconds to load InCommon or UK metadata. A simple Windows laptop can do it in about 2 minutes or maybe 2.5. That won't last forever, but it's not 6 minutes, we verified that.</p>
