<p style="margin-top:0;margin-bottom:10px;; margin: 10px 0 0 0">Let me start by saying that if someone submitted an untested patch to my project, I know I wouldn't be very pleased. But hear me out...</p>
<p style="margin-top:0;margin-bottom:10px;; margin: 10px 0 0 0">On the moonshot-dev email list, <a href="https://www.jiscmail.ac.uk/cgi-bin/webadmin?A2=ind1706&L=MOONSHOT-DEV&F=&S=&P=54" class="external-link" rel="nofollow" style="color: #3b73af; text-decoration: none">a bug was reported</a> where the "tids" process goes into an infinite loop at shutdown. The traceback points to log4shib::Category::getChainedPriority() as the location of the loop. In that code, it seems the only way to infinitely loop would be if the category tree becomes circular – e.g., the rootCategory acquires a parent (either to itself or to another member of the tree that is rooted at rootCategory.) But a reading of the code shows that that case is guarded against – an exception is thrown if we try to assign a parent to rootCategory.</p>
<p style="margin-top:0;margin-bottom:10px;; margin: 10px 0 0 0">However, note that in the stack trace, we're running exit handlers. More specifically, we're running C++ static destructor: The method gssEapLocalAttrProviderFinalize was invoked from the destructor of a singleton class that's defined statically in an anonymous namespace.</p>
<p style="margin-top:0;margin-bottom:10px;; margin: 10px 0 0 0">The exact order in which C++ static destructors are invoked is notoriously undefined by the Standard. However, there's reason to think that log4shib's static destructors – at least some of them – may have been invoked before this call chain happened. We do know that destructors are invoked in the strict reverse order of the constructors, and it's very likely that the mech_eap library was initialized before the log4shib library was initialized (because mech_eap is probably the only consumer of libshibresolver, and therefore of log4shib, in this process.)</p>
<p style="margin-top:0;margin-bottom:10px;; margin: 10px 0 0 0">Maybe we shouldn't be calling ShibbolethResolver::term from within an exit handler/static destructor. But it would be nice if we could, and it would be nice if log4shib were available throughout the process teardown.</p>
<p style="margin-top:0;margin-bottom:10px;; margin: 10px 0 0 0">Hence, I've attached an <b>untested</b> patch in which all of the static class objects that I could find in log4shib are replaced by pointers that are allocated via new(). As far as I can tell, the nature of these changes means that if the updated code compiles at all, the runtime behavior is very likely to be identical to the original code. However, since these objects are now managed via pointers, they won't be destroyed at all. That might cause some issues with valgrind et al., but at least the process will exit cleanly. The patch applies cleanly to commit fd0bb1.</p>
<p style="margin-top:0;margin-bottom:10px;; margin: 10px 0 0 0">And I'm sorry I haven't been able to test this yet; I will if the opportunity arises.</p>
