<p style="margin: 10px 0 0 0">Well, I didn't really see this as a metrics problem myself, that was more what <a href="https://issues.shibboleth.net/jira/browse/OSJ-202" title="Add "last successful refresh attempt" to batch metadata resolvers" class="issue-link" data-issue-key="OSJ-202" style="color: #3b73af; text-decoration: none">OSJ-202</a> was focusing on.</p>
<p style="margin: 10px 0 0 0">I think in terms of reporting something about expiration, the metric we want isn't a boolean, but just reporting the root expiration (understanding all the caveats about child expirations). Best to report the information than to pre-determine what somebody is trying to do with it (e.g. determine if it's older than now).</p>
<p style="margin: 10px 0 0 0">The logging takes care of a lot of my concerns, but I would need to see it in action with some testing to see if I think we should add anything else.</p>
<p style="margin: 10px 0 0 0">My idea to periodically force out the cache tag was more of a "I think this will get around the current logging limitation" suggestion but if the logging's changed, that may not really matter. So I'll have to kick the tires with it a bit. But my sense is that we still want some louder WARN explicitly meaning "the expiration is impending". Logging "nothing's changed" on INFO is good, but the WARN can be added based on some local threshold so it's more suited to addressing the local problem of metadata sources breaking.</p>
