<p style="margin: 10px 0 0 0">It seems there's 2 separate concerns here: 1) logging 2) metrics/status page.</p>
<p style="margin: 10px 0 0 0">I think logging is easy. Aside from changing the "nothing's changed" to INFO, I think we can at the end of the <tt>refresh()</tt> in the finally block, simply check the current expiration status (call <tt>isValid()</tt>, and log a a WARN. That will handle not only the "nothing's changed" + expired cached case, but also expired cached + refresh errors due to exceptions and new fetched bytes that are already pre-expired (#4 and #2 respectively in <a href="https://issues.shibboleth.net/jira/browse/OSJ-202" title="Add "last successful refresh attempt" to batch metadata resolvers" class="issue-link" data-issue-key="OSJ-202" style="color: #3b73af; text-decoration: none">OSJ-202</a>).</p>
<p style="margin: 10px 0 0 0">That's easy to do for the root element. I don't know if we want to traverse the whole tree looking for anything that's expired. Aside from the expense, it's also not clear that that's useful. Also should point out that we check the validity of every <tt>EntityDescriptor</tt> when it's resolved by a caller, and we do log when invalid, but on DEBUG. That's in <tt>AbstractMetadataResolver</tt>, <tt>lookupEntityID(entityID)</tt> So maybe we should up that to WARN, and that kind of eliminates the need to care about anything but the root element in the <tt>refresh()</tt> check, which for aggregates is also the vast majority case (i.e. with validUntil only on the root).</p>
<p style="margin: 10px 0 0 0">I'll go ahead and provisionally check these changes in.</p>
<p style="margin: 10px 0 0 0">Status/metrics: I'm not as sure how to handle that, esp since the metrics stuff is likely to change anyway. But note that we do keep the original unfiltered metadata in the backing store (which might be different than the filtered version), so it's not exactly accurate that we lose the notion of it as an expirable object. As long as we're talking about code running inside the resolver hierarchy with access to protected members, we can eval that. </p>
