<p style="margin: 10px 0 0 0">To expand on what Scott said, I actually opened this yesterday and decided that I need to spend time thinking about it (and I don't have much for serious architectural work of that right now).</p>
<p style="margin: 10px 0 0 0">I remain adamant that I'm not going to mindlessly 1+ a process which may not be strategic for us, that's the way that kludges happen. That's not so say that it not pretty likely that the metadata generator will be extended, but it will be done in a way which makes sense. I might, for instance, architect a better API (and hide the current one behind it), we might provide a property file driven mechanism (a.k.a a map) to feed it from Ant. We might stop metageneration as a facet of installation (in V4) and require people to work through a process.</p>
<p style="margin: 10px 0 0 0">We need to understand where we are going.</p>
<p style="margin: 10px 0 0 0">OTOH Making it easier for people to shoot themselves in the foot by just sharing automatically generated metadata is very very low on my priorities, and there is far too much evidence that this is going on.</p>
