<p style="margin: 10px 0 0 0">Yes, Gauges are a lot more messy than the rest of them. We have a bit of a gap right now that I should see if I can plug, because unlike with the rest of the types, I didn't have a conditional way of dealing with Gauges. I guess the conditional in this case is not whether the Gauge exists, but whether to register it.</p>
<p style="margin: 10px 0 0 0">Instead of modeling a DisabledGauge, I need to override the register() methods on the registry so that if the filter doesn't match, it just doesn't register the Gauge. That only reduces overhead if the Gauge does work itself, vs. just returning data that's already collated, but at least the disabling option would exist.</p>
<p style="margin: 10px 0 0 0">Anyway, I don't do any wrapping of the kind that would break your algorithm, but if the logging categories prevented the Gauge from being registered, your de-register call would just return false, which shouldn't cause any problem.</p>
