<p style="margin: 10px 0 0 0">The unused setting notwithstanding (I think that's just a bug), I did some reading and it sounds like the algorithm you used is a pretty common one, it just doesn't work the way I had long understood them to.</p>
<p style="margin: 10px 0 0 0">When people say "track invalid attempts within X minutes", I thought that literally meant all the attempts had to be within X minutes, but that seems to more commonly be an interval between the last attempt and the next one. So the total time from first to last attempt might be as long as the limit number times the window (e.g. 5 attempts, 5 minutes = 25 minutes).</p>
<p style="margin: 10px 0 0 0">With that approach, it seems very hard to really predict the experience on users, but it does have the advantage that tracking only the time of the last attempt works.</p>
<p style="margin: 10px 0 0 0">I'm curious what settings you're actually using with your version of this code? There didn't appear to be defaults present.</p>
