<p style="margin: 10px 0 0 0">The LDAP spec says (<a href="https://tools.ietf.org/html/rfc4517#section-3.3.28" class="external-link" rel="nofollow" style="color: #3b73af; text-decoration: none">https://tools.ietf.org/html/rfc4517#section-3.3.28</a>) that postalAddress (and homePostalAddress) should have the format "PostalAddress = line *( DOLLAR line )". Example values (from the spec) are then "1234 Main St.$Anytown, CA 12345$USA" and " \241,000,000 Sweepstakes$PO Box 1000000$Anytown, CA 12345$USA". If one has such values in LDAP (like we), then the IdP retrieves them including the $ as line separator. Consequently, the user consent module then also displays the $, which is not very human-readable. The $ is also used as line separator when this attribute is exposed to the web application by the Service Provider. This however is fine (and probably also needed because I guess the Shib SP can't deal with multiline attributes without some form of escaping the newlines).</p>
<p style="margin: 10px 0 0 0">So, it's really just about a human-friendly way of displaying multiline attributes (like postal address) during the user consent step.</p>
