<p style="margin: 10px 0 0 0">Yes, I think the whole idea really is to say that we should have an option to try and use the backup copy first, and then just fall into the normal refresh logic. And probably that option should be the default.</p>
<p style="margin: 10px 0 0 0">My notion was that this would be generic as a mechanism for skipping filters, but as far as which ones we would retrofit to support it, don't know. Most of them wouldn't be the sort you'd skip anyway.</p>
<p style="margin: 10px 0 0 0">Does it actually use the backing copy after startup now? I think that came up on the mailing list. If you look at the code, it checks in the background_load() method to see if there's metadata loaded. If there is, it just skips the load() call from the backup file.</p>
<p style="margin: 10px 0 0 0">So, no doesn't in fact happen much at all in a running system. At least with metadata. I don't recall how that works for the other config files, they may be different.</p>
<p style="margin: 10px 0 0 0">That said, I would probably implement the option in the filter in terms of the backup being used just because it's easier and it's a separation of concerns.</p>
