<p style="margin: 10px 0 0 0">It looks like <em>a</em> SUN EC provider is included in both the Oracle JDK and the OpenJDK, both versions 7 and 8.</p>
<p style="margin: 10px 0 0 0">However, the SUN EC provider relies on an external library (.so or .dll) which is not included in OpenJDK, leading the latter environment to have fewer algorithms available, and not including any interesting ones.</p>

<p style="margin: 10px 0 0 0">If we want EC to work properly outside the Oracle JDK, particularly with our baseline OpenJDK 7, it seems we need to use another provider. Interestingly, we already have a dependency on the Bouncy Castle library, which provides one:</p>

<p style="margin: 10px 0 0 0">Ideally, I think one would want to grep the list of providers and insert the Bouncy Castle one just above the Sun EC provider, and perhaps only if that provider was unable to give us what we needed.</p>
<p style="margin: 10px 0 0 0">I'd be interested to know what OpenSAML's approach to all this has been.</p>
