<p style="margin-top:0;margin-bottom:10px;; margin: 10px 0 0 0">The use of <tt>System.exit</tt> at random places in the code obscures flow and makes it very hard to unit test anything (all unit tests stop if System.exit is called, not just the one being executed).</p>
<p style="margin-top:0;margin-bottom:10px;; margin: 10px 0 0 0">A minimal step towards correcting this would be to make a system of unchecked exceptions which can be thrown in the same contexts as existing System.exit calls, and then caught by unit tests if necessary. Making them unchecked means that the existing method signatures won't have to change. These can then be replaced by checked exceptions longer term when we refactor for true testability.</p>
