<p style="margin: 10px 0 0 0">The primary PrincipalType involved here is IdPAttributePrincipal, and that is one principal per attribute, yes. But that means needing an AttributeDefinition for each principal instance, so that as what I was trying to avoid.</p>
<p style="margin: 10px 0 0 0">There's sort of a related issue, which is whether we actually implemented cloning of IdPAttributes. If you made this an AttributeDefinition (for maybe the specific case of IdPAttributePrincipal), and then attached encoders to the IdPAttribute object directly, you'd be mutating it and that might be a race issue with other threads.</p>
<p style="margin: 10px 0 0 0">I do think it would be reasonable though to just not attach encoders and require that they already be there.</p>
<p style="margin: 10px 0 0 0">So that's a concrete proposal:</p>

AttributeDefinition type="IdPAttributePrincipal"

must have sourceAttributeId (would be not terribly efficient, has to walk the list of Principals to find the matching one, but I don't know how else you could do it)

disallow AttributeEncoders in the config, and require that the underlying IdPAttribute already have them in place
</li>
</ul>
<p style="margin: 10px 0 0 0">The idea then would be that the ExternalAuthentication method that created them would have its own logic to add the right encoders (which would probably be a simple mapping table of id->SAML name and be simpler to set up than laying it all out in XML).</p>
