<p style="margin: 10px 0 0 0">Converting the servlets to MVC controllers is problematic for compatibility reasons, so the simplest solution isn't really going to work.</p>
<p style="margin: 10px 0 0 0">The error handling in web.xml is more flexible than I had gathered, and can dispatch on specific exception classes, but that's not actually helpful when the servlet's service() method can only throw two kinds of exceptions. But since the designated handler can be any resource in the web app, and it receives the exception object raised, I think we could build a rudimentary dispatcher to actually route the underlying cause from the non-MVC servlets over to a controller or webflow in MVC space that could re-raise the error so it can be handled by the main error code.</p>
