<p style="margin-top:0;margin-bottom:10px;; margin: 10px 0 0 0">I encountered this error while restarting our IdP:<br /> 2015-06-11 16:31:56,079 - ERROR <span class="error">[org.opensaml.saml.metadata.resolver.impl.AbstractMetadataResolver:194]</span> - Metadata provider failed to properly initialize, fail-fast=true, halting<br /> net.shibboleth.utilities.java.support.component.ComponentInitializationException: Error refreshing metadata during init<br /> at org.opensaml.saml.metadata.resolver.impl.AbstractReloadingMetadataResolver.initMetadataResolver(AbstractReloadingMetadataResolver.java:264)<br /> Caused by: net.shibboleth.utilities.java.support.resolver.ResolverException: net.shibboleth.utilities.java.support.logic.ConstraintViolationException: Scope cannot be null or empty<br /> at org.opensaml.saml.metadata.resolver.impl.AbstractReloadingMetadataResolver.refresh(AbstractReloadingMetadataResolver.java:297)<br /> Caused by: net.shibboleth.utilities.java.support.logic.ConstraintViolationException: Scope cannot be null or empty<br /> at net.shibboleth.utilities.java.support.logic.Constraint.isNotNull(Constraint.java:227)</p>
<p style="margin-top:0;margin-bottom:10px;; margin: 10px 0 0 0">Enventually I found out that this error was related to our federation metadata format. We let SP admins declare expected values for requested attributes, without syntaxic checks. Our metadata contained entries like :<br /> <md:RequestedAttribute FriendlyName="eduPersonScopedAffiliation" Name="urn:oid:1.3.6.1.4.<br /> 1.5923.1.1.1.9" NameFormat="urn:oasis:names:tc:SAML:2.0:attrname-format:uri" isRequired="true"><br /> <saml:AttributeValue>member@</saml:AttributeValue><br /> <saml:AttributeValue> registered-reader@</saml:AttributeValue><br /> </md:RequestedAttribute></p>
<p style="margin-top:0;margin-bottom:10px;; margin: 10px 0 0 0">We had a hard time finding the origin of the problem because the error in idp-process.log neither mentioned the problematic attribute name nor values.</p>
<p style="margin-top:0;margin-bottom:10px;; margin: 10px 0 0 0">Maybe the error message could be more contextual.</p>
