<p style="margin: 10px 0 0 0">Re: <cite style="font-style: italic">What's the upside for this class in particular being Java 6 source compatible</cite>?: it allows deploying to a Servlet container which treats the JSP sources as Java 6 code by default.</p>
<p style="margin: 10px 0 0 0">Stepping back from the question of how exactly an equivalent construct can be achieved with Java 6 (I'll gladly defer to those more knowledgeable), what was originally asking for with this feature request was an option for completely turning off the <tt>shibboleth_jsp</tt> servlet. I understand that fiddling with <tt>web.xml</tt> in the installer isn't feasible, but in this case, let me amend my original suggestion (<cite style="font-style: italic">turn off the shibboleth_jsp servlet in web.xml</cite>) by adding that it should be possible to achieve this without the necessity of having to compile a JSP requiring Java 7 language features (only to produce byte code which generates a 404 HTTP status, in the end).</p>

<p style="margin: 10px 0 0 0">We can either keep this "recommendation" in our guide for all 3.x IdP releases, or alternatively, the idea (which was the original motivation for filing this request) would be to switch to a method for disabling that URL which is officially supported by the IdP installer in 3.2.0 or later. If the latter requires compiling JSPs with Java-7-only constructs, however, then that solution is pretty moot as far as our use case (the installation guide for the SWITCHaai federation) is concerned.</p>
