It's a way of faking performance numbers at the expense of application behavior. I'm pretty sure that's the retry case I had to handle from Oracle. I don't recall it affecting MySQL as much, but then I wasn't using Hibernate...</p>
<p>A true deadlock of course is always a sign of a bug. So these aren't deadlocks in the sense that the term should be used, by their own admission.</p>
<p>It's not like these database changes are complex, it's nothing more than a read and an insert, and preventing the insert from failing by making sure any other reads wait on the insert completing. They're supposed to just take a table lock and be done with it, but when you can't make it take that lock, bad stuff happens. Basically, it's letting each transaction get row locks or partial table locks, and then when they attempt the update, it has to rollback because it can't revoke the other transaction's lock so that it can elevate to a table lock. It's just wrong.</p></div>
