<p>I'm not really sure what to do about the rest unless we do just artificially limit what we advertise. It feels weird to me though to essentially say we don't support SHA-512 or even combinations like SHA-256 plus MGF1wSHA-1, and that's why I was using the empty approach. By saying nothing I felt I was saying all of them in practice, and I really believe that is in fact what it will mean in practice.</p>

<p>The combinatorics here are the problem. It's not just listing 5 SHA methods, but 5 methods X 5 MGF1 functions. Nobody wants that, but equally, I don't think we want to say we support X and not Y when in fact we do support Y. And the spec says that if you say X, and not Y, the IdP should never use Y. But if you say neither, it's free to default to whatever it thinks the best method is.</p></div>
