It's (almost) a duplicate of what is already done by the decoders/encoders - logging the SAML protocol message to PROTOCOL_MESSAGE. Except that on the outbound side (assuming this is done before the Assertions are encrypted, the whole point of this issue) it's actually technically incorrect, since PROTOCOL_MESSAGE means the protocol messages coming into and going out of the system - and this wouldn't be that, there would be no such protocol message going out. So this would be confusing to the user (both duplication and technical inaccuracy) and also redefine what PROTOCOL_MESSAGE is.</p>
<p>I think the IdP should just log the unencrypted Assertion(s) somehow. Whether that is done in a separate action or in an existing action doesn't matter much. But we already have a well-defined mechanism for logging protocol messages in OpenSAML, so IMHO we shouldn't try and duplicate or redefine that in the IdP.</p>
