Oh, that was a casual comment. I just meant that the encoders can't themselves log that via PROTOCOL_MESSAGE, since they don't have access to that info.

For reference, in v2 the class which logged the unencrypted Assertion on DEBUG was:
edu.internet2.middleware.shibboleth.idp.profile.saml2.AbstractSAML2ProfileHandler

So an Abstract- class. Fwiw, if we really want to get strict about not requiring someone to ever configure (even on DEBUG) logging for an impl class, then I think we have a whole mess of issues to deal with. We'd pretty much have to define implementation-independent logging categories for every conceptual area of OpenSAML and the IdP, and touch a whole bunch of classes. Personally, I'm not sure we want to go there. I get the idea of it, but for logging it seems questionable wrt the amount of work.

If we do want to change the logging for this particular thing - the unencrypted Assertions - I think I'd favor a new dedicated category, like SAML_ASSERTION or something. For consistency perhaps we should also change it so that it doesn't log only the to-be-encrypted ones from the encryption action, but rather all issued Assertions. Probably in the Action where the assertion is fundamentally finalized, or maybe in one that composes the final Response, but prior to encryption, etc.

PROTOCOL_MESSAGE was intended to be just, well, protocol messages being encoded and decoded by Encoders and Decoders. And not just SAML. If we were to have Encoders and Decoders for other protocols, I would want those to adhere to the same logging convention. I don't know if Marvin did that for the CAS work. We might want to investigate adding that if not. (Don't know if he use the Decoder/Encoder API in fact).
