<p style='margin-top:0;margin-bottom:10px;'>This is pretty perverse, and means that people whose editors trim trailing spaces end up committing code which doesn't meet checkstyle, which in turn erodes the value of checkstyle generally. The CAS modules in the IdP are examples where every source file fails checkstyle, for example. I don't think that we should leave things in the current state in the long term.</p>
<p style='margin-top:0;margin-bottom:10px;'>There are several options to fix this. One is to force the trailing white space on the files in the CAS modules, but as I say above I think this would be a perverse response.</p>
<p style='margin-top:0;margin-bottom:10px;'>We could do the opposite: change the template to not have trailing spaces, and change every other file in the stack. I'm sure we could write something to automate this, so it needn't be as tedious as it sounds.</p>
<p style='margin-top:0;margin-bottom:10px;'>The other option would be to change the template in checkstyle.xml to one which implements a regular expression and permit optional white space in these specific locations. This strikes me as inelegant (because, you know, "now we have two problems"), but would have the advantage of only changing checkstyle.xml now.</p>
