<p>For the Dynamic provider, an in-memory cache is clearly fine, and better than essentially duplicating the in-meory cache, which is what you'd end up with.</p>

<p>For the HTTPResource case, yes, it again just ends up reinventing the wheel, and in the case that somebody's using a big filter policy, they could always turn off caching I guess.</p>

<p>For completeness, FileBackedHTTPResource seems to not cache either, it doesn't really use the backing fle as a cache source, just a failsafe.</p>

<p>One upshot of this, which I guess matches our position for a whle now, is that you don't want to use the ResourceBackedMetadataProvider + HTTPResource with a large metadata file, and if you do, you'd either end up caching the file in RAM, or not have caching, depending on what you tell it to do. And neither's great.</p>

<p>I sort of like that because it's clear. Before, it was so muddled why you'd avoid that and now it's not; don't use it.</p></div>
