In the meantime, the new service component has been installed and we're outside the critical section, and any new calls to access the service should be operating correctly against the new component. So there should be no hold up there.</p>
<p>The unload call takes a write lock on the component to ensure nobody's still using it, and then it destroys the Spring context. That's most likely the code that's taking 90 seconds to complete, I bet because it's calling the destroy() methods on all the various bits. Profiling might verify that.</p>
<p>But I don't see why it would matter, it should all happen in the background, and just take some CPU in a pretty routine "share the ball" kind of way, it shouldn't be locking anything up.</p>
<p>If Java's not multitasking this well, then we may need to rethink the decision to implement destructability on some of these things, since that's a no-op 90% of the time and is just wasting cycles calling empty methods.</p>
<p>If this is really just cosmetic and isn't causing any serious hold up, we might just want to move the logging line up to reflect that the service really has been reloaded earlier.</p></div>
