From commiters list:

What I'm actually seeing is that our new verifier behaves differently than both the original not-yet-commons-ssl one and the newer HttpClient 4.3.5 one. I've pretty much convinced myself (I think) that our X509Util.getCommonNames(X500Principal) is wrong. It should return the values in the reverse order than it currently does. It's not surprising that we haven't hit this before, b/c I think most existing use of that code is 1) esoteric and probably not used much in the real world anyway and 2) generally processes all CNs, so the order doesn't matter, except possibly for efficiency.

What's going on is this: The Java X500Principal serialization of the principal is according to RFC 1779 and 2253. There the "most specific" part of the DN is on the left-hand side and the least specific part on the right. Like:

cn=myhost.example.org, ou=MyDept, o=MyOrg

However, (I think) this is the reverse order in which things are actually stored in the ASN.1 structure. X509Util is just iterating that using BC's ASN.1 API, so based on our output that is at least what I infer to be the case.

Related: in openssl they by default use a reverse ordering from Java (maybe in keeping with the original ASN.1 structure?). For example, you'd see the above in the output of 'openssl x509' on a cert as:

o=MyOrg, ou=MyDept, cn=myhost.example.org

They also sometimes use the /-separated serialization, like "/o=MyOrg/ou=MyDept/cn=myhost.example.org/", for example as input arg to 'openssl req'. I don't know if that's a different RFC format or standardized in some way. Maybe someone else does.

Anyway, I think the logical interpretation of the "first" CN is the most specific one, so in:

cn=foo.example.org, cn=WebServers, cn=Hosts, o=SomeOrg

you'd expect foo.example.org to be the first one, and the list returned from a function like X509Util to be [foo.example.org, WebServers, Hosts].

X509Util is currently during in the reverse order, and I infer that that must be because the actual ASN.1 structure puts the most-specific part on the right.

The other hostname verifiers get it right b/c they're just operating on the X500Principal stringification directly, so the most-specific part is on the left already.

Does anyone know otherwise, or see anything wrong with this interpretation so far?

If not: I think our X509Util is broken and should return the CNs in the reverse order than it currently does. I doubt changing that is going to break anything so that's probably what I'm going to do. The fix is pretty easy, just reversing the list it currently generates.
