The reason that it is bad is that it mutates the HttpClient instance that is passed in at construction time, which may be shared amongst multiple components which communicate with various hosts. So setting a specific HostConfiguration on there really just isn't right. We perhaps should have made this method a no-op for that reason, when we deprecated it.</p>
<p>In general, the whole way that HttpClient 3.x works vis-a-vis socket factories, TLS and hostname verification is pretty broken, and all this will be fixed in OpenSAML 3.x, which uses HttpClient 4.x.</p>
<p>So I'm not inclined to change a fundamental part of the code and possibly introduce bugs or regressions in order to make a deprecated method work. If you really, really need this to work, I think you should be able to just subclass HTTPMetadataProvider and override buildGetMethod() to do what you want. </p>
<p>Note also the changes we are making in 2.6.2 in JOST-238, with global registration of a hostname-verifying socket factory in the library bootstrap process. You could subsequently set a different global HttpClient socket factory if you like, using the same technique.</p></div>
