<p>I'll note that I've tried to replace the odbc shared session store with the memcached one, but it's quite a bit slower (roughly 20ms - about 33% - for a simple page load).  I'd guess that that's due to the fact that memcached one seems to be using a single connection to the server for the whole process rather than one per apache worker that's connected to the shibd.  Working around that slighly by adding multiple servers only partially helps since that just distributes the load based on session key.  Also, it didn't look like the the memcached store was doing any sort of network compression between shibd and the memcached server, which generally helps reduce latency.</p>

<p>However, at least the memcached store doesn't have memory leaks from what I've seen.</p>

<p>Anyways, I'm starting to agree with some of Scott's comments I've seen elsewhere - make the application setup its own shared session and let shibd just use a local memory store - it's much much faster.  Unfortunately, we don't control the application layer in most of our setups.</p>
