There are a LOT of barriers put up by web flow to prevent moving data out of the flow and back in without losing the conversational integrity features SWF has.

There are two main options:

hang a structure off of a Session attribute that's keyed by the flow execution key

use a filter to translate flow scope data into request attributes on entry, and back into flow scope attributes on exit, also passing the execution key to the external resource

A filter is somewhat more elegant, but requires very deep surgery into SWF to get at the FlowExecutionRepository to access flow state. I'm close to this working, but I had to revamp the webflow-config to explicitly instantiate many internal SWF beans to get a bean defined I could access with Spring in the filter.

I think this is basically pointless as compared to the session option. The session design is a bit more duplicative, but may end up more seamless from the point of view of the external code. A filter may even be doable to pull the session data out by flow key and create request attributes, essentially relying on the session to mediate data out of the flow before the externalRedirect without having to go access it directly.

I was able to make SWF issue an externalRedirect for a view state that included the flow execution URL and key as parameters.

A lot of building blocks, but still a long way to go. SWF really, really does not want you to break out of its box.
