The way this works is that it just calls the provider's refresh() method, and the refresh() schedules the next RefreshMetadataTask to run.</p>
<p>In the refresh() method there, I think there is the potential case where the next task wouldn't be scheduled. This would happen if the code in the try block throws a java.lang.Error, i.e a Throwable that is not caught by the catch(Exception e) block. In this case, the nextRefresh value doesn't get updated (retains the old value), so in the finally block where it calculates the nextRefreshDelay:</p>
<p>long nextRefreshDelay = nextRefresh.getMillis() - System.currentTimeMillis();</p>
<p>I believe that's guaranteed to be a negative value. When it's passed to the Timer instance to schedule the next refresh:</p>
<p>taskTimer.schedule(refresMetadataTask, nextRefreshDelay);</p>
<p>the negative value would cause an IllegalArgumentException to be thrown, causing the task scheduling to fail, and the provider to simply be dead at that point from a refreshing standpoint.</p>
<p>I think java.lang.Errors aren't very common and are often catastrophic to the JVM. However, I do see that actually the Commons 3.x HttpClient that we use in v2 does define an HttpClientError that is a java.lang.Error. Don't know how/when this might be thrown, but since the metadata provider is definitely doing an HTTP call here, maybe there is some code path where that might be thrown.</p>
<p>I'll do some more HttpClient investigation, and also see if I can replicate in my test IdP.</p>
<p>If this is accurate, I think the fix would be simple: just change the catch block there to catch Throwable rather than Exception.</p></div>
