<p>Just discovered a somewhat significant issue implied by their new design: If you set a non-null connection manager on their builder, then several of the other properties on their builder are ignored, as they only serve as inputs to the internally-constructed default connection manager (for the case where you don't supply a connection manager). These are: SSL socket factory, hostname verifier, SSLContext, SocketConfig, ConnectionConfig, maxConTotal and maxConPerRoute. (To their credit, they do document this on the Javadoc for the relevant setter methods on the builder).</p>
<p>It is also deprecated now to get the connection manager instance from the HttpClient interface.</p>
<p>So the combination of these 2 facts means: if you want to use something like the java-support IdleConnectionSweeper, you have to explicitly construct your instance of the connection manger so that you have a handle to it to give to the sweeper. Which in turn means you have to supply all the above properties and/or related things (e.g Registry<ConnectionSocketFactory>) to the connection manager instance, NOT the builder. Instead you hand the connection manager to the builder.</p>
<p>So for example our builder's connectionDisregardSslCertificate property as illustrated above would have no effect if a connection manager had been set on their builder, which it would have to have been if you wanted to use the IdleConnectionSweeper.</p>
<p>Due to their paradigm shift, it's looking more like maybe our builders just don't make sense any more.</p></div>
