<p>Guava MultiMap: Looking at this more closely I'm not sure this makes sense. A strict interpretation of what a abstract "map" data structure is would include that the caller can insert a value under a specified key, e.g. put(K, V). I certainly think this is the generally accepted notion in Java.</p>
<p>Under this definition, ClasstoInstanceMultimap in fact isn't really a Map. It has no put(K, V) method. It's really just a Set, that also just happens to have auto-generated indexes by Class. (And by the way, it's not even a MultiSet, since the latter (vs a Set) allows duplicate values and this class does not).</p>
<p>In fact the only real differences between this and the older ClassIndexedSet are that: 1) ClasstoInstanceMultimap supports optionally indexing by all superclasses and interfaces and 2) by implication, get(Class) can return more than one item. </p>
<p>So, don't know about Guava MultiMap. <b>Maybe</b> you could think of it implementing that interface insofar as it could support put(K,V) in addition to just put(V). On the former, the K could be anything <b>except</b> a class. So it could allow association with some generically-parameterized key type (e.g. String) in addition to it's internal Class indexing. However, I'm not sure how much value this adds, or what use cases we'd be trying to address. Seems like we'd be doing it just to do it, and the existing class already works well for the things for which it was designed.</p>
<p>ValueTypeIndexedMap: Same issue here, this is a Map with put(K, V). Additionally, I can't see that at this time we are even using this class anywhere, definitely not in any of the "major" projects. So doesn't seem there would be a lot of value in this.</p>
<p>Summary: I don't think either of the two ideas have a lot of value, although certainly open to whatever I'm missing. As far as other potential changes, the thing that makes more sense to me off-hand is actually that we consider changing the name of this class to reflect that it is in fact a Set, not a Map or Multimap.</p>
