For the ClasspathResource, if it's a file living on the actual filesystem, URL#toExternalForm() just gives you a plain old file: URL. If it's in a jar, however, you get a jar URL, which I've often seen but don't know if it's standardized or whether other components can understand it or make use of it. E.g. input of:</p>

<p>Some searching shows that most of our main code uses getLocation() just for logging, descriptive tags, etc, and doesn't do anything "operational" with it.</p>
<p>However, I note that SchemaBuilder uses it seemingly non-trivially in javax.xml.transform.stream.StreamSource constructor as a systemId. Docs say it "must be a String that conforms to the URI syntax". Which the above does (I think), but I'm not sure if the universe will implode if you actually give it that. Hoping someone else knows this better than I. Ian, since you mentioned XSLT transforms above, would this in fact be related to what you wanted in the first place?</p>
<p>I have the code and unit test ready, but I'll hold off checking in til we're sure it's not A Bad Thing(tm).</p>
