<p>I don't distinguish the two cases you're identifying, but I suppose you could come up with an edge case involving a blacklist that would make it desirable to tell the difference. I certainly could have done that.</p>

<p>I agree that it isn't always terribly elegant to use Exceptions that way, but sometimes it's just the simplest way to deal with it. But if you're starting from scratch, perhaps you should just do what you suggested on the call, and alter the Filter API to actually return the result. Mine really was just a copy of Chad's, and it had to throw to signal anything.</p></div>
