<p>They have their own SSLSocketFactory impl used by the client (not related to or a subclass/impl of the same-named JSSE one).</p>

<p>Hostname verification: Out-of-the-box default is to use an internal default X509HostnameVerifier (also their interface).  It correctly handles the standard CN and DNS subject altname cases, as well as wildcards in CN and alt names.  Default for the wildcards is the "browser compatible" looser style of (they say) curl and Firefox, where the wilcard matches multiple segments of the domain name.  There is also a "strict" verifier, where the only difference is that a wildcard matches only a single segment.  Also an "allow all" verifier, which allows any hostname (disables the check basically).  Did various tests against my servers which have alt names and wildcards and all worked as expected.</p>

<p>Trust/validation:  You can construct with a javax.net.ssl.SSLContext, so you can pretty much have complete flexibility with that via its JSSE TrustManagers and KeyManagers.  There's also an option for their own TrustStrategy, which precedes the standard JSSE trust eval and overrides it if it returns success.  Looks like it is the easiest way to implement the "no trust" behavior from v2.</p>
