I don't personally like the idea of the unmarshallers doing things like internally decoding crypto objects into native Java objects. That seems to violate some kind of separation of concerns, and defeats the point of having the configurable plugins that do this. </p>
<p>The main issue with this stuff has always been the complexity of the metadata credential caching. It's currently maintained separately and there's issues with the cache maintenance. I think that a middle ground here, and my counter proposal, is to allow storage of the Credential(s) which represent a KeyInfo right on the KeyInfo interface via a get/set Collection<Credential> or similar. The metadata credential resolver could then cache the credentials right on the KeyInfo, so there's no separate cache.</p>
<p>As a second option, the getter could perhaps optionally be passed a flag, and if true and there were no cached credentials, then some kind of basic KeyInfoCredentialResolver which can handle the basic types would run internally and cache and then return the resolved credentials.</p>
<p>Seems like this would get most or all of what is desired here. Most/all of those KeyInfo children are never really used on their own, only inside a KeyInfo, so having them process and expose their own data seems unnecessary. But allowing it to be stored and/or optionally generated on the KeyInfo itself seems more natural, esp since in our model KeyInfo == Credential(s) (mostly). </p></div>
