Some more brainstorming: I’m wondering now if we want to build some library support for Velocity-backed template generation inside OpenSAML, with the existing metadata XMLObjects used to feed into Velocity to produce the output. That’s suitably open-ended enough to handle just about any setting/extension/etc. one might want to generate.

The part that would be “outside” the library would then be the plugin with CLI to actually create the inputs to the generation API.

The advantage of this idea is that we might be able to just one-off the specific task of generating the metadata inside the installer, with less code duplication with the plugin. In essence, we don’t have to “make” the installer magic up the right command line options, instead it just mocks up the proper objects to feed into the library’s generator. Should be much less awkward code and splits the mess apart.
