OK, this failed. There is still an issue with the logic used to decide if to use the module path, and what goes onto the patch-module path. See https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/MJAVADOC-652. I did manage to update their sample project to show the issue, and create a PR ( https://github.com/apache/maven-javadoc-plugin/pull/139 ) for disabling it via a parameter.

In the meantime, I will need to revert to our version of the plugin.
