One decision I did make was to limit the new transcoder to the new type; that is, the transcoder won’t translate String values into date/time on the wire. Doing that would mean putting all of the eventual support for converting data into an Instant in both places and creating two ways to do the same thing. We have a lot of that historically across the project but as a new feature, I want to limit that.
