Thanks for looking into it, and for clarifying/confirming that the source of the problem is likely the driver or ODBC manager.  I didn't understand the evidence well enough to know if it exonerated the SP's ODBC plugin.

I will try using newer versions of unixODBC and mysql-odbc-connector, as what's included in RHEL6 is still quite old.  I will update when I have more information.  FWIW, we also have the same problem on Debian 6.0.x systems, which use similar versions of these two packages.

I agree that using catchAll to prevent the crashes is undesirable for this problem.  Staying up, but functioning improperly or not at all, is not worth it.  We have a watchdog that just restarts shibd anyway.
